Choosing hardwood floors

Ease of cleaning, longevity and the rich finish make hardwood flooring the perfect choice for any home. The real question is: what kind of hardwood flooring are you going to get? Yep, that’s right—there is more than one kind!

Here are a few tips that will help you during the selection process, thus ensuring your new floors fits all your needs.

#1 Where is it going? Consider the location of the room as well as the size when you are selecting your flooring. For example, we suggest not putting hardwood in areas that are exposed to heavy levels of moisture. As time goes by the moisture will cause your floors to warp, thus totally destroying your hardwood beyond repair. While we have installed hardwood in bathrooms in the past, it is very important that you select right sealer to ensure your floor doesn’t become damaged.

#2 High or low traffic areas: Opting to go with lighter color finishes in high traffic areas will show less wear and tear over time. However, if you insist on a darker finish look for flooring that is designed specifically for high foot traffic.

#3 Budget: Depending on the grade, hardwood flooring can be quite expensive. If you have a set, planned budget we advise using a selection manager to assist in the process. At RIGGS Company & Design, our Selection Manager ONLY shows clients flooring that will fit into their budget. This way anything that is out of your price range will never even be brought to the table.

In addition, installing your floor can be quite tricky if you are not sure what you’re doing. Are we saying a homeowner cannot successfully install the flooring themselves? Absolutely not! However, we suggest doing your homework before your go forward with the project.
